Personality:

The first impression Marc Spector leaves isn’t exactly a favourable one. His cynicism was developed at a too-young age, when an accident that led to the death of his brother shifted everything that Marc had come to know about the world, people, and himself. It had been hard enough for him, only a boy at the time, to grapple with the guilt of it. The people he’d needed the most - his parents - only let him down, particularly his mother who could never recover from the loss of one son and turned her grief into abuse towards her surviving one. Having experienced two very profound traumas so close to one another and no proper way to begin healing from it, this was the beginning of Marc’s dissociations. Steven, in many ways, became all the vulnerability that Marc himself was too afraid to show to the world.

With Steven being able to wear his heart on his sleeve without fear of repercussion, Marc never had to learn how to express his emotions. For him, it was easier that way, and it was preferable, and as time went on he fell into the habit of compartmentalizing. It suited his work. As soon as he was able to leave his home, he enlisted with the marines, where being unfeeling was an asset. It allowed Marc to approach high-stress situations objectively, letting him tune out the world around him and channel his focus into a place where his conscience didn’t need to be present. Stoicism became a form of self-preservation, both in the line of duty and in his civilian life.

But despite doing a great job of ignoring his problems, Marc could never get rid of them. His mental illness also led to him getting discharged from the Marines, and it’s that very fragile state that attracted the attention of Khonshu. As Marc lay dying on the steps of Khonshu’s temple, it’s hard to say exactly why he chose life in servitude to the god instead of death. Maybe he felt guilty for wanting to die, as though he still needed to live the long life his brother never got to. Whatever the reason, the choice was self-inflicted penance, and Khonshu was all too keen to take advantage of Marc’s broken mind to keep him under thumb. Living as Khonshu’s avatar meant that Marc had to do a lot of things he didn’t want to do. As the guilt and regret built up, a break was inevitable; after nearly two decades, the dam of emotions he built up burst when he tried to face the reality of what his mother had done to him. Whatever answers he’d hoped to find after her death, all he discovered was the strain his cracked psyche was under when he began to lose control of keeping himself and Steven separate.

It’s not all bad, though. While Marc fronts his worst habits as a defense mechanism to keep people away, those who are fortunate enough to be let in will get a glimpse at his more redeemable qualities. While he may not be classically book-smart, Marc’s intelligence is evident in a lot of what he does. Being a mercenary required a particular savviness. A lot of it wasn’t far off from espionage-like tactics (keeping a low profile, knowing who to talk to and what questions to ask, and covering his tracks to name a few). He speaks Arabic, and it’s likely that he knows enough of a few other languages to get by in whatever country he might find himself in thanks to his “work”.

Marc also means well in most of what he does. Despite the fact that he believes he’s bad luck for anyone that gets close to him, he still tries to do right by them. Not only was this the case when he met his wife, Layla, who he originally approached to try and rid himself of guilt involving her father’s death, but he keeps the practice up with Steven. Marc goes to a lot of lengths to keep Steven as separate from the craziness of his life as he can, from making sure none of Steven’s sleep-walking traps are disturbed to even trying to replace Steven’s fish after it died when Marc took them away for a few days. He even admits that a lot of the bad stuff in their life was something Steven was never meant to see, having wanted Steven to have the opportunity to live a happier life than he himself had. Misguided, yes, but Marc’s intentions with both Layla and Steven were to shelter them, not deceive.

While his protective attitude is born out of affection and a desire to keep those he loves safe, it also gives Marc yet another excuse to push people out of his life. Still, even if he’s not winning any Most Charming awards, anyone that really knows Marc knows that he’ll find a way to come through for them and he’ll put himself through the worst of it to keep them safe.
